The beauty of being kind to yourself

We are the generation of innovative thinkers, hard-working go getters, digitally minded folk; who love their nutri-bullets just as much as their nextflix account. We find ways to do things better, more efficiently and quicker. So then why are we a generation of of self-loathing millennials? Why are we not as kind to ourselves as we are to our friends and family?

We were raised on hearty morals and good values, to be selfless and to help others, but somewhere along the way, amongst all the do-gooding; we’ve forgotten ourselves and abdonded our own needs for happiness. I’m not talking about anything untoward or that we must be selfish in order to be happy, but doesn’t happiness start from within? Do we really need to please others to make ourselves feel better? When was the last time you stopped to smell the fresh crisp air before beginning the daily commute?

These are all questions I’ve been asking myself recently and have found myself completely dumbfounded. I made a shocking discovery. I haven’t been true to myself. Truth is a powerful tool and staying true to yourself is one of the best ways to make every living, breathing moment count. We sometimes avoid the truth, either because its painful to hear or painful to say, but we rarely focus on positive truths, finding the positive in a negative –looking on the bright side. As intelligent we are today, we seem to lack basic understanding of listening to our own hearts and being kind to ourselves. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it’s your responsibility.

When we learn to take care of own feelings, our own needs and ourselves and deal with them in the present moment, we feel full of love and good energy inside. We practice mindfulness without knowing it and that’s why we can then share love with others. This kind of love is authentic, long lasting and sustainable. It’s not premeditated or born out of a desire to be accepted as good, or to get love and approval. It will never be flippant or demanding; it’s love without a gripping sense of expectation. Self-love ultimately brings about this kind of emotional freedom. We become better human beings, decrease our chances of illness and feel the genuine love of others. We become a pleasure to be around and inspire greatness. So burn the candles, wear the good underwear, eat the cake and drink the good wine! For today, we will take care of ourselves.

I finish with an open ended question. What makes you truly, inexplicably happy and when was the last time you took time out to appreciate it…?

Happy soul searching,

Priya
